5 Steps to Create Easy Winter Planters

Easy Winter Planters | How to make a pine cone planter

Today I am talking about the easiest winter planters I created over the weekend.  I use black cast iron urns in our front walkway throughout the year and switch them out seasonally.  These urns look so pretty when it has snowed and they last all winter long!

Easy winter planters with pine cones, cedar, birch logs, and red berries

Here’s what I used to create my winter urns:

Potting soil
2 black cast iron urn planters
6 birch poles, cut to size at different lengths (3 in each pot)
7 lb cedar clippings
7 lb white pine clippings
10 red berry sprays (5 in each pot)
6 oversized frosted pine cones (3 in each pot)

STEP ONE

Step 1: add birch logs to make easy winter planters

Fill urns with potting soil and add three birch poles to the center of each pot. I think it looks best when they are different sizes.

STEP TWO

Add in the cedar clippings along the outer edge of the planters.  I like to use cedar first because its very flexible and looks so pretty spilling over the urn.

Step 2: Add fresh cedar to make easy winter planters

STEP THREE

Add in white pine clippings towards the center of the urn.  The white pine has longer needles and will give your greenery some height. It think it looks really pretty draping over the cedar!

STEP FOUR

Circle around the planter and check for any bare spots. Make sure the greenery has a nice shape to it from all angles.  Then add in the red berries.  I added 5 berry sprays to each planter.

STEP FIVE

Last, add the oversized pine cones for the finishing touch.  Locally, Mulhalls has oversized frosted pinecones with stakes on them for $6.99 each. If you have pine cones with stakes on them you can disregard the wire used in this step.  Mine do not have stakes on them so I attach the pine cones with gardening wire. I just wrap a little bit around the center of the pine cone and then attach each pine cone to each birch pole.

Thats it! Simple, beautiful and easy winter planters that you can enjoy all winter long.  The nice thing about these planters is if you get sick of the berries and pine cones, you can easily switch out the embellishments and they will look like completely different winter planters. The most important part is having a pretty base of evergreens!

Mine usually lasts till February. As long as you water it in when you first put them in there, they should stay green for awhile!
