When we were designing our home we knew we wanted a shingle style home exterior. We fell in love with the approachable and classic feel of Nantucket, Cape Cod, and Hamptons style homes. Achieving this architectural style was important to us, but there were other factors to consider as well. Our winters can be harsh here and the temperature fluctuates drastically, so we knew we would need to find a shingle product that could withstand environmental changes. Also, like most families with young kids, we don’t really have time for upkeep and ongoing maintenance. Durability and longevity were other important factors as well. If we were going to invest our money in a quality product, we wanted it to last for years to come.
Today I am sharing the top 3 reasons why we chose Hardie® Shingle siding for our home exterior.
This blog post is sponsored by James Hardie. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. You can click here to read my disclosures and terms of use.
Classic Shingle Style Home Aesthetic
Making sure our exterior matched our vision was really important to us in choosing a shingle siding product. No matter how durable, we wanted to achieve the classic shingle style home exterior we hoped for. Hardie® Shingle siding is a fiber cement product made to look like cedar. When they are painted, they look just like real wood except you get the benefits of durability and longevity, too.
Durability
The Hardie® Shingle siding product is extremely durable with our fluctuating weather and stands up to water, high winds, hail, and even fire.
Lifetime Value
Selecting shingle siding for your home is a big decision, and a financial commitment. We wanted to make sure we were spending our money wisely and getting the best product available, for the longest duration possible. James Hardie invented fiber cement and continues to lead the field, so you know you are getting the best. They back their products and offer a 30-year, non-prorated warranty on Hardie® siding products.
What type of shingles are best?
After researching several shingle options, including vinyl and wood shingles, we felt that the Hardie® Shingle siding product gave us everything we were looking for and more. We are so happy with our Hardie® Shingle siding aesthetically, and we have peace of mind knowing it will last for years to come.

Your home is absolutely beautiful. Two questions, what did you use for your roofing materials and what made you choose to not go with the light gray hardie shingles?
Kate
Jennifer ThomasWe chose a Davinci roof – specifically the Bellaforte shake collection in the color Mountain. It is a composite roofing material… main reasons we chose it is because it has a lifetime warranty, extremely durable (we get hail here) and has lifetime cost advantages with insurance companies.
Emily
Jennifer ThomasI’m wondering the same. What is the roofing and info on that.
Kate
EmilyHi there! We have a DaVinci roof – it’s the bellaforte series in the color “Mountain”. https://www.davinciroofscapes.com

Hi! Can you share which specific shingles from Hardie? Are they staggered or straight? Thanks!
Kate

Hi Kate
Congrats on your beautiful home! I am building a coastal cottage style home and your color palette is very much along the lines of what I am thinking. I am planning to use Hardie and Davinci as well.
Having visited the DaVinci site, I am having a hard time connecting your roof to the Mountain color. On their site it looks much darker and more brown, It almost looks like yours is Weathered Gray. Interested in your thoughts because it is such a big decision in terms of the look/feel of the house.
Thanks for your thoughts
Michael
Kate
MichaelHi Michael,
Yes Mountain his correct. I would recommend ordering a sample just to make sure it fits the look of your home. The photos on my site have been slightly lightened so that may affect how the shingle color looks in then image… also if it is getting direct sun it will look lighter. I hope that helps.
Best,
Kate

Carrie

Anne
I love your home!! Did you do rustic or smooth for your Hardie trim boards? And 5/4 or 4/4? Thank you!
Kate
AnneWe did rustic, but I actually like smooth better for trim. We did do some smooth on the exterior of our dinette. 5 1/2″
Deirdre

Just love your home!! Do you know what sheen you used on the exterior paint and trim? Thank you so much!
Cindy
What brand and color of garage doors did you go with? I’m currently needing to order and my exterior is painted Revere Pewter and has white dove trim. I’m not sure what color of doors to go with. I’d love woodgrain but not sure that fits my budget yet. Any thoughts? We are considering the chi doors. Thank you for your insight. I LOVE your home!
Chris
Hi can we get an update on your paint job? Have you had to repaint the house since completing the job?
Kate
ChrisHi there! Nope – we have not had to do any repainting or touch ups on the exterior.

Also, what is the height spacing of each of the shingle courses -…5″ or &” exposure? Thanks!
Kate
JoyThey have texture on them like real wood – 7″ exposure.

Hi! Beautiful home! What size exposure hardi shake is this? 5 or 7 inch? And can I ask if this color is similar to their pre painted light mist? Considering hardi shake versus certainteed shake. Thanks!
Kate
TamarIt is 7 inch I believe. I am not sure how the color compares, I’m sorry! Our Hardie shake is painted Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray if that helps.
